Mortal Kombat II Overview
Mortal Kombat II is a fighting game that supports both individual and competitive two-player matches. Its narrative follows the aftermath of the first tournament, with Earthrealm's warriors lured to Outworld under false pretenses for a contest that is actually a trap set by Emperor Shao Kahn.
The combat system involves best-of-three duels viewed from the side. Characters utilize a standard set of physical attacks and blocks, but are primarily defined by their unique special moves, which require specific command inputs. The final challenge is considered challenging, as players must overcome a series of opponents culminating in powerful boss characters, ending with Shao Kahn himself.
A key element carried over from the franchise is the inclusion of Fatalities, violent finishing maneuvers performed after victory. This installment expanded the concept with multiple such moves per fighter, introduced environmental stage Fatalities, and later added alternative hidden finishers. The playable roster grew substantially, incorporating several new fighters alongside returning ones, with some characters, like Shang Tsung, possessing unique abilities such as transformation.
Various home console and portable versions reproduced the core experience, though sometimes with technical or content alterations. The arcade framework, which allowed for head-to-head competition, remained the foundation for these adaptations and subsequent re-releases.
