Metroid II: Return of Samus continues the story from its NES predecessor. The player again assumes the role of Samus Aran, whose mission is to eradicate the Metroid species on the planet SR388.
This objective follows the destruction of the space pirates' Mother Brain, as unchecked Metroid reproduction poses a galactic threat. The mission becomes challenging due to the creatures having undergone mutation, which increases their resilience.
