Metroid : Zero Mission Overview
Metroid: Zero Mission is an action platformer where players control Samus Aran, a bounty hunter sent by the Galactic Federation. Her mission is to disrupt a Space Pirate operation on the planet Zebes, which involves destroying a central biocomputer and eliminating the parasitic Metroids they have brought there.
Progression is built around exploration and acquiring new abilities. The world is composed of interconnected side-view zones like Brinstar and Norfair, with a map system and save points to track and record progress. Players must repeatedly traverse these areas, using upgrades such as the Morph Ball and various beams to access new paths hidden behind destructible blocks or environmental puzzles.
Combat involves managing ammunition and health, which enemies can drop, and often requires specific tactics like freezing foes or using the Speed Booster to solve room-based challenges. Major bosses guard key upgrades necessary for advancement. The experience is generally fair, with clear objectives aided by a minimap, but becomes more challenging in an unlocked higher difficulty mode that increases enemy damage and resource scarcity.
The game is a retelling and expansion of Samus's first mission, adding new story scenes, areas, and a distinct stealth sequence. This interlude temporarily changes gameplay to focus on evasion before Samus regains her full arsenal. Completion grants access to the original 8-bit Metroid, and connectivity with Metroid Fusion can provide additional bonuses.
