Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders Overview
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is a puzzle solving adventure presented from a third person perspective. Its mechanics involve selecting verb commands to manipulate the environment, though specific options like examining or conversing are absent. The experience is structured around a globe-trotting narrative that spans multiple countries and extends beyond Earth.
Players control a group of up to four protagonists, including the tabloid reporter Zak. After a bizarre dream, he uncovers an alien plot to reduce human intelligence via the telephone network. To thwart this, he recruits an anthropologist named Annie and her companions Melissa and Leslie. The party must locate and disable the devices responsible for the threat.
Certain puzzles offer multiple solutions or are not strictly required for progression. Characters can be swapped between freely after they join, and items may be traded when they occupy the same place. The gameplay approach is similar to that found in Maniac Mansion.
Available releases include different versions of the game. One is based on the FM Towns edition, which features enhanced 256 color VGA visuals and improved audio. Another is the original DOS floppy disk version. Both are provided together in some distributions.
