Star Wars: Rebel Assault Overview
Star Wars: Rebel Assault presents a series of combat scenarios using a fixed-path, or on-rails, design. The action is viewed from several perspectives, including a first-person cockpit and third-person views from behind or above the player's craft. These sequences use pre-rendered video for their environments.
Players assume the role of a Rebel recruit named Rookie One, whose voice can be selected as male or female. The narrative incorporates events inspired by the original film trilogy, such as the Hoth battle and the Death Star assault, but introduces its own story elements and characters. Progression is managed through a password system, which varies between the PC and console releases.
Gameplay involves piloting four different vehicles: the Skyhopper, A-Wing, X-Wing, and Snowspeeder. Missions involve navigating confined spaces like canyons and asteroid fields, engaging in dogfights with TIE Fighters, and attacking large Imperial assets like a Star Destroyer or an AT-AT walker. One mission shifts to a ground-based perspective where the player, seen from behind, must sidestep to avoid fire from stormtroopers in static environments.
Movement is generally restricted, with third-person vehicle levels allowing some freedom to dodge obstacles while first-person segments focus challenging on precise targeting. Certain levels offer a choice between branching paths through the pre-determined course.
