The player assumes the role of a Spanish explorer tasked with claiming territory, interacting with indigenous populations through diplomacy or force, and pursuing personal wealth and renown.
Gameplay involves managing expeditions between voyages, which includes purchasing ships, outfitting them, and hiring crews. Players can select from three skill levels and choose to navigate either a historically based map of the Americas or a procedurally generated one.
This edition distinguishes itself from a simple port through its enhanced high-resolution visuals and digitized audio. It represents a full reconstruction for the PC platform, though a separate native PC version existed previously.
