Return of the Phantom Overview
Return of the Phantom is a third-person adventure game adapted from Gaston Leroux's novel. The setting alternates between the modern day of 1993 and the historical year of 1881 within the same Parisian opera house.
Players assume the role of detective Raoul Montand, who is enlisted by the opera's manager to investigate a catastrophic event blamed on the legendary Phantom. The core gameplay involves using a verb-based interface to examine locations, converse with characters, and manipulate items to solve puzzles and uncover the story's secrets.
Much of the investigation occurs inside the opera building and its extensive underground network of tunnels, which are rumored to be the Phantom's domain. The CD release of the title features spoken dialogue for the characters.
