King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow is a third-person adventure game focused on puzzle-solving. The player controls Prince Alexander, who journeys to the Land of the Green Isles after a shipwreck to find Princess Cassima.
He discovers a kingdom in crisis, with its rulers dead and war looming, and must explore four distinct islands inspired by myths. The gameplay involves navigating these areas, interacting with characters and creatures using a point-and-click verb interface, and solving puzzles that can lead to fatal consequences for the prince, making the experience challenging. While many puzzles progress in a linear fashion, the conclusion offers two separate paths to reach the final encounter.
