Birds of Prey Overview
Birds of Prey is a flight simulation depicting a fictionalized conflict between NATO-aligned forces and the Soviet Union. The player assumes the role of a pilot for one of these two sides, managing an entire campaign from the cockpit. A key feature is the extensive roster of aircraft, with nearly forty different models available across the two factions. These range from fighters and bombers to reconnaissance and specialized stealth planes.
Gameplay involves executing various mission types, which include air combat, ground attack, bombing runs, and reconnaissance. For lengthy transits, an autopilot function can be engaged when no immediate threats are present. The campaign is persistent, with key land bases and aircraft carriers serving as operational hubs that can be damaged by enemy action, temporarily limiting available resources.
Player progression is tied to individual pilot saves, with each side requiring a separate file. While most missions are part of the core campaign, a distinct test pilot mode exists for flying experimental aircraft like the X-15 and X-29 outside of the main conflict. The player's available aircraft are restricted to those belonging to their chosen faction for the duration of that campaign.
