Space Invaders Overview
Space Invaders for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is derived from the 1994 arcade release Space Invaders DX, though it omits that version's parody mode. The core experience centers on a classic single-player mode where players can select from different visual cabinet styles to serve as the playfield backdrop. A competitive two-player option is also present, utilizing a split-screen format where each participant aims to outlast the other while destroying more invaders.
Platform-specific variations exist. The Game Boy cartridge provides both single and two-player gameplay in its native monochrome display, but gains access to the full suite of SNES cabinet backgrounds when used with a Super Game Boy adapter. Conversely, the WonderSwan portable version is limited to a black and white cabinet style but retains the versus mode. An additional release for the PC Engine CD format introduced a "cosmic versus" mode, featuring anime-style illustrations of girls as backgrounds, which also appear in a separate single-player bonus mode.
