Relief Pitcher Overview
Relief Pitcher is a baseball video game offering distinct modes that focus on different aspects of the sport. Players can engage in a full nine-inning contest or tackle specialized scenarios centered on late-game pressure.
Gameplay involves both pitching and batting from a perspective behind the batter. The pitching mechanic uses a timing-based meter to control the grip and power of throws, including intentional walks. When batting, timing is also crucial for connecting with the ball, with options for high or low swings, power swings, and bunts. Strategic elements extend to base running, allowing for leads, steals, and hit-and-run plays.
Team selection involves four fictional squads, each with a defined strength like power hitting or fielding. Before a game, pitchers are customized by choosing a special pitch type, handedness, and delivery style. The commentary is provided by Jack Buck.
Beyond the standard game, the Relief Pitcher modes present specific challenging situations. A single-player season consists of twelve games where the player must save games in the late innings. A two-player variant frames this as a best-of-seven series of similar high-pressure scenarios.
