Rolling Thunder 3 Overview
Rolling Thunder 3 is a side-scrolling action game for the Sega Genesis. Its narrative is set at the close of the twentieth century, where a terrorist group named Geldra is destroying global communications satellites. As agent Jay of the Rolling Thunder organization, the player's objective is to defeat the lieutenant Dread, while other agents confront a separate leader elsewhere.
The player selects a single character for the entire campaign, which consists of ten levels. Progression is saved via a password system provided after each mission. While the game retains a challenging nature, it is considered more accessible than its predecessors. This is due to increased starting health and an immediate respawn at the point of death, rather than forcing a restart from a distant checkpoint.
Gameplay involves navigating stages while engaging enemies with various firearms. A key tactical element is the ability to take cover in doorways to avoid fire and replenish ammunition. Before each mission, the player must choose one special weapon from options like a flamethrower, bazooka, or grenade launcher; this choice is permanent for that stage and the weapon cannot be carried forward. Agent Jay can fire while jumping and, with certain arms, aim diagonally upward. To maintain pacing, a sniper will target stationary players with a laser sight, replacing a traditional mission timer.
