The Flintstones - The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak! is a platforming adventure where players control Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble. The narrative begins with the two fathers searching for their lost children, Pebbles and Bam-Bam, a quest complicated by a volcanic eruption that forces a long detour around a mountain.
Gameplay involves switching between the two protagonists, each possessing distinct physical and combat capabilities. Fred can climb certain surfaces, while Barney is able to hang from ropes and vines. Their weapon sets also differ: Fred wields a powerful, chargeable club, whereas Barney uses a weaker slingshot for ranged attacks. Some items, such as throwing axes and bowling balls, are available for both characters to use.
This title represents the second NES game based on The Flintstones license. Progress through the stages requires the strategic application of each character's unique abilities to overcome specific environmental obstacles.
