Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! presents a conflict where Earth deploys Godzilla and Mothra against an alien invasion from Planet X. The invaders have positioned monsters like King Ghidora and Mecha-Godzilla across the solar system.
Gameplay is structured in turns, alternating between player and computer actions. Each turn allows the player to choose one of the two protector monsters to move across a planetary hex map. Movement initiates side-scrolling action sequences where the monster must navigate terrain-specific hazards and enemies.
The two monsters offer distinct tactical options. Mothra covers more ground per turn with a four-tile range and flight, attacking with eye lasers and angled pollen bombs. Godzilla is limited to two tiles of movement but possesses greater strength, utilizing physical attacks and a frontal radioactive breath.
Major encounters occur when the player's monster enters a hex occupied by an enemy creature. These confrontations function as timed boss battles, lasting ninety seconds or until one monster is defeated.
