Ghoul School Overview
Ghoul School is an NES game where players control a high school student named Spike O'Hara. The setting is a small American town where a paranormal invasion occurs after a mysterious skull is brought to the school's anatomy teacher, Dr. Femur. This event triggers a takeover by the undead on Halloween, transforming the school's occupants into hostile creatures.
The objective is to navigate the transformed school building, which contains 129 rooms, to rescue the captured head cheerleader, Samantha Pom-Pom. Spike begins his mission with basic equipment, a baseball bat and sneakers, but can find various weapons and utility items throughout the environment. These include melee tools like a sickle, projectile weapons such as a gamma gun, and specialized footwear that grants abilities like jumping higher or walking on ceilings.
Progress is gated by specific items, such as a Golden Apple required to pass a guardian blocking access to later areas. The situation is challenging, as previous rescue attempts by others have failed, and the school doors lock behind Spike upon entry. The gameplay involves exploration and combat using the assortment of discovered gear to overcome the supernatural threats now inhabiting the halls.
