Flying Dragon - The Secret Scroll is a side-scrolling action game where the player uses kung fu techniques against enemies. The narrative follows Ryohi, a student who trains at Shorinji after his master is robbed of a powerful martial arts scroll. Years later, he enters a world tournament to confront the group responsible for the theft, the Tusk Soldiers.
Gameplay involves navigating levels and defeating opponents to progress. Certain stronger enemies, which are signaled by a screen change, must be overcome as they provide essential items. These items follow a specific upgrade path that ultimately grants a key required to finish a stage. The structure also includes dedicated one-on-one duel sequences, where the objective is to strike a specific point on an opponent while protecting a similar target on Ryohi's own body.
