Chaos World begins with a royal quest to cure the princess and address a monster infestation, a mission given to the child of the warrior Mars. This initial investigation soon reveals a broader, more dangerous conspiracy involving dark forces.
Players can extensively customize their protagonist, selecting from multiple classes and a gender, then distributing starting skill points. The party system allows for the recruitment of numerous companions, with adventurer guilds serving as a primary source for these allies, potentially bringing the total to fourteen members. A day and night cycle operates within the game world.
