Boulder Dash is a game where the player controls Rockford, navigating through caves to gather diamonds. A specific quantity of these jewels must be collected in each stage to unlock an exit.
The environment contains both monsters and boulders, which introduce a challenging hazard system. While falling boulders can eliminate enemies, they are equally dangerous to the player character. These rocks fall when the supporting terrain is excavated or when they are moved over a gap.
Progression involves sixteen levels, with the complexity increasing through more intricate puzzles and reduced time allowances. Five selectable skill settings modify the required diamond count and the time limit, directly affecting the difficulty.
