Winter Gold Overview
Winter Gold is a sports simulation for the Game Boy based on the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, though it lacks the official license. Players represent one of twenty nations across seven distinct winter sports.
The events employ varied control schemes and visual perspectives. Downhill skiing and slalom use an isometric view where skier movement is screen-relative, with actions for crouching to gain speed or braking. A third-person 3D perspective follows the bobsleigh, while short track skating is viewed from above and uses alternating directional inputs for movement.
Other events introduce different mechanics. Biathlon switches to a side-scrolling view where acceleration is managed alongside a heart meter, and shooting involves aiming a crosshair. For ski jumping and freestyle moguls, button presses initiate jumps.
Before a full competition, any single event can be practiced separately. The competition itself can be configured in several ways, allowing players to engage with the full set of events, specific halves, or groups focused on or excluding the downhill disciplines.
