Super Mario Land is a side scrolling platformer for the Game Boy. The player controls Mario, who must rescue Princess Daisy after she is kidnapped by a spaceman named Tatanga.
Gameplay involves jumping on enemies and hitting blocks to collect coins and power ups. The structure progresses through worlds that conclude with boss encounters, which are typically defeated by causing the floor beneath them to collapse. This approach follows the established formula of earlier Mario titles.
A departure from the standard platforming are two levels designed as scrolling shoot em ups. In one, Mario navigates a submarine, and in another, he pilots an aeroplane.
