Spud's Adventure casts the player as a potato on a mission to save a princess, requiring an ascent through a multi-floor tower. The journey involves interacting with characters who provide guidance, and combat that yields experience points leading to increased health capacity.
Levels alternate between two distinct formats. One presents maze-like environments where the objective is to locate an exit while fending off enemies through projectile attacks; contact with these foes depletes health. The other format is a block-pushing puzzle where crates must be maneuvered onto specific markers, and these stages allow for complete resets. The inability to pull blocks introduces a challenging logistical element to the puzzle solving.
