Shanghai Pocket Overview
Shanghai Pocket is a portable adaptation of the solitaire tile-matching game using Mah Jong tiles. The core objective involves clearing a field by removing pairs of identical tiles, with the restriction that only tiles with an unobstructed side can be selected. A challenging aspect is that poor choices can render the puzzle unsolvable.
Beyond the standard puzzle, the Shanghai mode incorporates a light narrative where each tile layout corresponds to a Zodiac animal needing its power restored, framing the completion of twelve stages. Additional modes alter the basic formula. Kong Kong introduces competitive play against either a computer or another player via link cable, where clearing tiles slowly results in receiving extra tiles from the opponent.
Other included variants are Goldrush, a race against an opponent to reach a specific gold-marked tile, and a Challenge mode exclusive to the WonderSwan version, which presents a large puzzle to complete for score under time pressure.
