Shanghai Overview

Alt. Names: 上海

Shanghai is a Game Boy adaptation of a tile matching game derived from Mah-Jong. The objective is to clear the board by pairing identical tiles, but a tile must be free on one side to be eligible for removal.

This particular release was handled by Hal Laboratory under license from Activision. It differs from other versions in the series by offering just one pre arranged tile layout, commonly known as "The Turtle" or "The Pyramid."

Players can adjust certain presentation elements. The tile faces can be set to display either small pictorial designs or simpler alphanumeric characters, with the latter providing clearer readability. Background music is also selectable from three different options.

A hint system is included to assist players who cannot find a valid match, making the experience potentially fair for those who become stuck.
