Sengoku Ninja-kun Overview

Alt. Names: Sengoku Ninja-kun, 戦国忍者くん

Sengoku Ninja-kun is an action RPG for the Game Boy, originally released in Japan as part of the Ninja Jajamaru-kun series. The player controls a ninja tasked with investigating the rumored death of a warlord, a quest that involves seeking advice from a teacher and negotiating with an ally's daughter to proceed.

The setting blends historical references, such as the daimyo Oda Nobunaga, with creatures from Japanese folklore like tengu and ghosts. Some visual elements also suggest inspiration from modern animation. The gameplay involves navigating a feudal Japanese landscape, where the direct path to objectives is often obstructed, requiring indirect solutions.

Combat utilizes a primary Ninja Sword and Throwing Stars, supplemented by secondary weapons like the Masamune and Throwing Knives which trade power for agility. The inventory also includes healing items such as Herbs and Potions, along with utility tools like Camouflage and Fire.

Movement speed for the player character is notably slow, but enemy behavior is calibrated to this pace, making the overall difficulty fair. The game shares its technical foundation with other American Sammy titles, specifically the Rolan's Curse series.
