Street Rod 2: The Next Generation Overview
Street Rod 2: The Next Generation continues the core activity of acquiring, repairing, and customizing automobiles to compete in races. The player's objective remains to defeat a reigning champion across three specific courses, a victory that also involves narrative stakes concerning status and relationships. The setting advances six years from the first game, introducing a changed roster of available vehicles.
Racing occurs across three distinct venues. Alongside returning drag and road race formats, a new aqueduct course introduces physical obstacles and the risk of flipping on sloped walls. An additional weekly event, "Grudge Night," imposes a unique drag racing rule where the player must win without exceeding a self-set breakout time. The financial risk system of wagering money or vehicle pink slips is retained from the previous title.
Vehicle customization sees expansion in several mechanical areas. Beyond familiar components like the engine, transmission, and tires, players can now modify differentials and the exhaust system. The chassis and bumpers are also adjustable, though the ability to apply decorative stickers has been removed. The control scheme is noted as being somewhat tighter, while the overall interface and gameplay feel are largely consistent. Crashes can result from various environmental hazards like rocks, barriers, or traversing roadworks at high speed.
