North & South Overview
North & South is a strategy-action title that adapts a Belgian comic series for a humorous take on the American Civil War. Players choose to lead the Union or Confederate forces in a campaign to dominate a map of the United States.
Control is contested through a mix of turn-based strategy and real-time action sequences. On the strategic map, players manage armies, capture states, and disrupt supply lines, with random events like storms influencing the campaign. When opposing armies clash, the perspective shifts to a side-view battlefield where direct command of infantry, cavalry, and artillery units in real-time determines the outcome.
The gameplay is further diversified by specific action interludes. These arcade-style challenges involve directly controlling a soldier to complete objectives like capturing a fort or stopping a train, offering a break from the strategic layer and granting control of key resources. A two-player competitive mode is available, where opponents alternate between the strategic map and the action battles, testing both planning and reflexes.
Different platform versions altered the experience. While home computer releases featured detailed graphics and speech, console ports often simplified controls and adjusted presentation to suit their hardware, sometimes streamlining game mechanics in the process.
