Megafortress Overview
Megafortress is a flight simulation based on the novel Flight of the Old Dog, casting the player as commander of a fictional, stealth-enhanced B-52 variant. The primary experience is a campaign of dangerous missions, with most set against a Middle Eastern backdrop reflecting early 1990s tensions, though operations also extend to other theaters like Soviet airspace.
Success requires managing the aircraft's multiple specialized stations, which the player switches between in real time. These roles include piloting, precision targeting as the bombardier, and operating electronic countermeasures, with coordination between them being essential. Players must plan loadouts and routes from mission briefings before confronting threats like fighters and surface-to-air missiles.
Gameplay emphasizes a balance between offensive strikes using guided weapons and defensive survival through electronic warfare and careful navigation. Realistic systems like fuel and damage management contribute to the experience, where failing objectives results in mission failure. Beyond the campaign, standalone missions and training exercises are available, with the overall difficulty becoming challenging as later missions introduce simultaneous threats from advanced defenses.
