In Countdown, players control Mason Powers, an ex CIA operative who escapes a Turkish asylum after being imprisoned for a crime he believes he did not commit. His quest to clear his name pulls him back into a global network of espionage and violence.
The game is structured as an adventure where travel and dialogue are central. The protagonist visits numerous international locations, interacting with environments and people through a verb based command system. Conversations employ specific social commands like Bluff or Hassle, and incorrect choices can result in a game over. While inventory puzzles exist, there are no visual indicators for interactive elements, making exploration challenging.
A strict ninety six hour time limit governs the entire experience, with travel and spending choices affecting the pace. Some sections feature top down maze navigation. The possibility of death or becoming permanently stuck is present. Visually, the game blends hand painted scenes with digitized photography for character portraits, and it utilizes digitized sound and speech accessible through standard PC hardware.
