PowerMonger is a strategy game where the player assumes the role of a warlord seeking to conquer a world divided into 195 territories. This objective is shared by several rival leaders within the game.
The experience builds upon the foundational design of Populous but shifts the focus to warfare. Progression involves a combination of strategic elements including trade, diplomatic relations, technological inventions, and aggressive invasion tactics.
A key technical advancement is the use of a polygonal gameworld, which allows the player to freely rotate and pan the camera view. Certain computer versions of the game also support two-player competition via modem connection.
