NHL 98 Overview
NHL 98 is a hockey simulation for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Its presentation adopts a television broadcast style, with commentary provided by Jim Hughson and Darryl Reaugh, and stat graphics appearing during stoppages in play.
Control over players is more direct, as the move to four action keys streamlined inputs that previously required double-tapping. Visuals show refinement, with player models appearing less angular and texture detail improved, partly due to 3Dfx support.
The game expands its scope beyond the NHL by including 18 international teams, a notable addition coinciding with the first Olympic tournament to feature professional players. Available modes allow for full seasons, playoff series of various lengths, and a dedicated Penalty Shootout option. Strategic depth is enhanced by the inclusion of adjustable tactics developed by NHL coach Marc Crawford.
