Sonic and Knuckles & Sonic 3 Overview

Alt. Names: みんなで空気読み。3, 다함께 쿠키요미3 -아버지가 아들에게-

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles is the complete experience created when Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is connected with Sonic & Knuckles using Sega’s Lock On Technology. Once combined, the two games merge into one large adventure featuring all stages, characters, and mechanics from both titles.

Originally released on the Sega Mega Drive and later re released digitally, this combined version is widely considered the definitive way to play the Sonic 3 era. It delivers a longer story, expanded progression system, and additional transformations not available in either game alone.

Table of Contents

Game Overview

  • System Sega Mega Drive
  • Publisher Sega
  • Developer Sonic Team
  • Genre Action Platformer
  • Players 1 to 2

The combined version transforms Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles into one continuous storyline. Players begin in the Sonic 3 zones and continue directly into the Sonic & Knuckles stages without interruption.

Lock On Technology Explained

Lock On Technology was a cartridge feature that allowed Sonic & Knuckles to connect physically with another Sonic game. When Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was attached, the system unlocked the full Sonic 3 & Knuckles experience.

Instead of playing two separate games, all content becomes unified. Levels, bosses, music, emerald systems, and save data are merged into one seamless progression.

Combined Gameplay Features

When the games are combined, several major gameplay differences appear. The most noticeable change is the full level sequence spanning both titles.

  • All zones from Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are accessible.
  • The adventure begins in Sonic 3 and continues into Sonic & Knuckles.
  • The Death Egg falls intact instead of being destroyed.
  • The Sonic 3 final boss is skipped for Sonic and Tails.

This structure creates a much longer and more cohesive journey, turning the experience into one of the biggest classic Sonic campaigns.

Playable Characters

Combining the games expands character availability across stages.

  • Knuckles becomes playable in Sonic 3 levels.
  • Tails becomes playable in Sonic & Knuckles levels.
  • Each character has unique routes and boss encounters.

Knuckles stages often include alternate paths, exclusive areas, and different boss fights compared to Sonic and Tails.

Chaos Emeralds and Super Emeralds

Collecting all Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 unlocks a new quest. When entering the first Giant Ring in Mushroom Hill Zone, players gain access to Hidden Palace Zone.

Here, a Special Stage hub allows the collection of seven Super Emeralds. These emeralds unlock powerful new transformations.

  • Sonic can transform into Hyper Sonic.
  • Knuckles can transform into Hyper Knuckles.
  • Tails can become Super Tails, but only with Super Emeralds.

Chaos Emeralds alone do not grant Tails a transformation, making the Super Emerald quest essential for full completion.

Save System Changes

The combined game enhances the original save system.

  • Save slots increase from 6 to 8.
  • Progress is stored using Sonic 3 cartridge FRAM.
  • Slots display lives and continues.
  • Collected Super Emeralds are shown.

This expanded system supports the longer campaign structure.

Bonus Stages

Passing a Star Post unlocks bonus stages from both games. Access depends on how many Rings you carry.

  • 20 to 34 Rings unlock the Slot Machine stage.
  • 35 to 49 Rings unlock the Glowing Spheres stage.
  • 50 to 65 Rings unlock the Gumball Machine stage.

This combination gives players more opportunities to earn rewards and emerald progress.

Level Design Differences

Some stages feature adjustments when played in the combined version.

  • Knuckles routes differ from Sonic and Tails paths.
  • Object placement changes in certain Sonic 3 zones.
  • Launch Base boss flow differs by character.
  • Mushroom Hill Zone includes extended intro sequences.

For example, Sonic arrives in Mushroom Hill carried by Tails, while Knuckles falls in from an earlier explosion sequence. These small transitions help connect both games into one story.

Because of these differences, replaying the combined game with each character offers a fresh experience every time.
