Dai-4-ji Super Robot Taisen concludes the original narrative arc of its series, serving as a direct follow-up to the third title and the EX scenario. The plot unfolds in a period of political fracture for humanity, set three months after a prior alien assault. Earth's governing body, weakened by war, shifts its focus inward, sparking colonial rebellion and the rise of opposing factions like the Titans and the AEUG. Simultaneously, old adversaries reemerge in new forms, such as the Neue DC, while a missing military unit is reclassified as rogue. These internal conflicts persist even as a new extraterrestrial threat, referred to as the Guests, approaches.
The game introduced several foundational systems to the franchise. Players could create and customize a protagonist, selecting appearance, gender, and birth date, with the latter influencing the special mental abilities, or spirit commands, available during combat. This pilot could be assigned to a chosen robot type, and both the unit's weapons and the pilot's skills could be improved over time. The narrative itself features branching paths determined by player decisions during the campaign.
Its roster of mecha was expanded with the inclusion of series like Mazinkaiser, L-Gaim, and Go Shogun. The title represents the final chapter in what is termed the Classic timeline before the series was reimagined for later iterations.
