Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is a menu-driven adventure game where the player directs a hero through interactions like checking objects, giving items, and conversing with characters. The central quest involves Sir Cucumber, who is tasked with rescuing Princess Tomato from the traitorous minister Pumpkin to earn her hand and the kingdom.
The narrative begins with a betrayal that disrupts the peace of the Salad Kingdom, leading to the king's demise and the princess's capture. This NES release is an adaptation of an earlier computer title, featuring revised visuals, altered story elements, and a replaced interface system. A mini-game based on rock-paper-scissors, called Finger Battle, was also added for this version.
