Nobunaga's Ambition Overview
Nobunaga's Ambition is a turn-based strategy title set during Japan's 16th century Sengoku period, a time of fractured feudal states. The objective is to unify the nation under a single ruler, with players able to choose from numerous daimyo, including the historically ambitious Nobunaga Oda. Each leader possesses numerical ratings in areas such as Ambition, Luck, and IQ, which are dynamic and can shift during play, while Age introduces a challenging long-term consideration as it increases the risk of death.
Gameplay proceeds in seasonal turns where a single command can be issued per season. Administrative and military preparations, such as recruiting soldiers, training armies, and managing peasant morale, are conducted from a menu. Diplomatic and covert actions, including forming alliances or employing ninjas for sabotage and assassination, are also available. When conflicts escalate to war, combat occurs on a separate hex-based map viewed from above.
These tactical battles involve moving various unit types across terrain that influences their effectiveness, with each unit having specific strengths and weaknesses against others. Players alternate giving orders like attack, move, or bribe until one side's forces are defeated or surrender. The game offers different starting scenarios, varying the scale of the conquest from 17 to 50 regions, and its systems share similarities with other strategy titles from the same developer, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
