Mystery Quest is an adaptation of the title Hao Kun no Fushigina Tabi. The player controls an apprentice wizard named Hao, who is tasked by the Great Wizard with locating four concealed talismans within separate castles.
Gameplay involves navigating exterior landscapes, castle interiors, and subterranean areas. Hao's primary means of attack is a magic spell, which can be fired in multiple directions, including horizontally and at upward angles, even while jumping. This spell can be enhanced once during the adventure.
A small selection of items is available to assist in overcoming obstacles. The quest structure revolves around exploring the distinct castles to recover the wizard's hidden talismans.
