Cowboy Kid is an action game with role playing elements set in a western frontier. Players control Sam, a young man who becomes sheriff after his father disappears while investigating a train robbery rumor. The narrative begins with Sam being ambushed by the Scorpion gang and rescued by an Indian warrior named Little Chief, who then serves as his deputy.
Core progression involves visiting townspeople to obtain necessary items, such as first acquiring a knife to break open chests for money. This gold is used to purchase other tools like a key, which grants access to buildings like the sheriff's office. Once officially appointed, the player can hunt wanted outlaws across different towns for bounty.
Primary gameplay consists of moving horizontally through town environments. The player collects gold from chests while simultaneously engaging enemies in combat to avoid being killed. This action is interspersed with specific mini games, including a shooting gallery where targets representing criminals must be hit while avoiding those depicting civilians.
