The Legend of Zelda Overview
The Legend of Zelda is the first entry in its series, presenting a top-down adventure where a boy named Link explores the kingdom of Hyrule. His objective is to rescue Princess Zelda from the villain Ganon by locating eight dungeon-hidden fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom.
Exploration occurs on an overworld map composed of distinct screens containing forests, mountains, and other terrain. Link moves freely between these areas, though each screen transition typically brings encounters with enemies that must be fought with a sword. Combat is challenging, as taking any damage restricts Link to close-range attacks, whereas at full health he can launch the sword as a projectile.
Defeated enemies often drop useful items, including restorative hearts, currency known as rupees for purchases, and bombs that can damage foes or destroy certain walls. Link's vitality is measured in hearts, a maximum that can be increased permanently by finding special containers. The game features a battery backup to save progress, and death returns Link to an overworld starting point or dungeon entrance while letting him keep all acquired items.
The core progression involves discovering dungeons hidden in the overworld. Inside, Link navigates rooms, collects keys, and defeats a boss monster to claim a Triforce piece and a health upgrade. Successfully clearing a dungeon, however, respawns all overworld enemies. Upon assembling the complete Triforce, Link can access Ganon's lair in Death Mountain for the final confrontation. After completing the quest, a more challenging second quest becomes available.
