Blades of Steel is a hockey arcade action game adapted from its arcade counterpart. It does not involve team customization or statistical management, focusing instead on direct gameplay.
Matches can be played by one player against the computer or by two players competing against each other. The single-player mode includes options for a single game or a tournament. During play, penalties such as icing are called by the referee.
A distinctive feature is the occasional on-ice fight, which triggers a close-up, player-controlled mini-game. The loser of this confrontation is sent to the penalty box. Fights that persist are stopped by the referee. The game also incorporates brief digitized voice clips.
