Star Wars: Episode I - Racer Overview
Star Wars: Episode I - Racer for the Game Boy Color adapts the pod racing concept into a top-down, one-on-one racing format. The objective is simply to be the first to cross the finish line, as races do not involve laps.
Progression is structured around five planets, each containing four tracks. Initially, only the first track on each planet and Anakin Skywalker's pod racer are accessible. Victory unlocks subsequent tracks and allows the player to select the racer of the defeated opponent. Conquering all four tracks on a planet triggers a duel against Sebulba; winning this grants access to his racer, though it can be lost again upon a subsequent defeat. Each racer has distinct statistics for top speed, acceleration, turning, and body strength, which determines how much damage it can sustain.
Gameplay mechanics involve managing a turbo boost and damage. Reaching normal top speed activates a flashing light, signaling the availability of a turbo to achieve maximum velocity. However, prolonged use damages the racer. Collisions with opponents or track obstacles also cause damage, which can be repaired during a race at the cost of reduced speed and acceleration. Excessive damage causes the racer to explode, resulting only in a brief time penalty before it respawns on the track. The game includes a two-player link cable mode and a built-in rumble feature.
