NYR: New York Race Overview
NYR: New York Race is a Game Boy Color title that adapts a futuristic racing concept from the film The Fifth Element. Its handheld iteration employs a top-down perspective and a simplified structure compared to other platform versions.
Progression is structured around divisions, each containing two tracks. Initial access is limited to the first division and a basic taxi vehicle. Advancing requires a challenging first-place finish in all races of a division to unlock the next. Currency earned from podium placements is used to purchase additional hovercars, with eight models offering varied statistics for power, traction, and shielding. More capable vehicles become available for purchase only as higher divisions are reached, and game progress is recorded using a password system.
The core racing involves four-lap circuits against three opponents on circular courses. A key mechanic is altitude control, allowing cars to drive on the ground or fly higher. Maximum speed is achieved in the high position, but certain track obstacles must be passed underneath, necessitating a descent. Ground-level driving is also required to collect power-ups, which include offensive missiles, defensive shields, speed modifiers, and temporary invulnerability. An on-screen arrow assists navigation by indicating upcoming corners and, when airborne, impending obstacles.
