Mickey's Speedway USA Overview
Mickey's Speedway USA is an isometric racing title for the Game Boy Color, sharing its technical foundation with Mickey's Racing Adventure. The premise involves a cross-country pursuit, as Mickey Mouse and his friends race to rescue Pluto from a group of kidnappers known as the Weasels.
Players select from a roster including Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pete to compete on circuits based on American locations such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Yellowstone. The primary Adventure Mode structures events as a Grand Prix, where points are awarded across four races in a world to determine a trophy winner. Various power-ups are available during races, such as projectile weapons, homing missiles, turbo boosts, and hazards to drop on the track.
Additional modes provide different objectives. Time Trials challenge players to beat specific lap times on unlocked tracks, while Professor Von Drake's Driving School tasks them with precision maneuvers like parking and slalom courses. Performance in these modes is ranked, with gold stars awarded for top-tier completion; penalties are applied for errors like hitting obstacles, making accuracy important.
The game utilizes several Game Boy Color peripherals, enabling two-player link cable races, data transfer from Mickey's Racing Adventure via IR to unlock secrets, and connectivity with the Nintendo 64 version using the Transfer Pak. Progress through the game unlocks collectible postcards and pictures, which can be printed using the Game Boy Printer.
