Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX Overview
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX for the Game Boy Color adapts a console BMX title to the handheld using a pre-existing engine from another HotGen game. The player selects one of eight professional riders, each possessing a unique signature move.
Gameplay is viewed from a side-scrolling perspective, with movement constrained to specific lanes that can be switched at designated points. Performing tricks successfully, without crashing, builds a power meter; when full, it enables the rider's signature move. Tricks are executed via button combinations while airborne or near certain objects.
The primary career mode spans five levels across dirt, street, and vert environments. Advancement requires completing various goals to earn magazine covers, which unlock subsequent areas. These objectives involve achieving target scores, locating collectibles, and executing specific tricks or combinations, sometimes consecutively without a bail. Additionally, competitions within levels award medals for a top-three finish.
Other modes include a training section that teaches controls and tricks across five areas, a free ride option for practicing unlocked levels without constraints, and a time trial where performing tricks extends the allotted time to finish a special track. Player progress is recorded using a password system.
