Knockout Kings Overview
Knockout Kings for the Game Boy Color is a portable adaptation of the EA Sports boxing series. It presents a roster of ten historical fighters, including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Rocky Marciano. The visual presentation uses a 2D, side-view perspective with exaggerated, cartoonish character sprites.
Players engage with several modes, such as a career where a custom boxer is developed through training and fights, and a slugfest ladder against the included legends. Matches are controlled through combinations of the D-Pad and face buttons for different punches. A unique single health bar represents both stamina and strength, and recovering from a knockdown requires rapid button input. In the slugfest mode, temporary power-ups appear to modify a boxer's attributes.
Progress in the career is maintained via password saves. The game also supports two-player matches using a link cable. Ringside atmosphere is provided by voice samples from referee Mills Lane offering commentary during bouts.
