Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX for the Game Boy Advance is a side-scrolling sports title where players control one of eight professional riders, each with unique statistics and special moves. The gameplay involves performing tricks, grinds, and combos through button inputs while navigating levels from a two-dimensional perspective. Movement occurs on horizontal lanes, but riders can shift vertically when on the ground, a system enhanced by the L button which locks the lane to prevent accidental shifts.
Progression is primarily driven by a Career mode spanning six levels, where players must complete specific objectives under time constraints to collect magazine covers and unlock later stages. These objectives are challenging, requiring high scores, finding hidden items, spelling a word by collecting letters, and executing precise trick sequences without failing. The final stage replaces these goals with a competition for medals based on score. Identical levels are reused in a Tournament mode focused on achieving a top-three ranking for judges.
Several auxiliary modes provide variety. Free Ride allows unlocked levels to be explored without a timer, while Time Trial uses four distinct dirt tracks where performing tricks is essential to extend a very strict time limit and reach the finish. The game also supports linked multiplayer with four distinct modes: direct score competition, a bomb-tag game, a star collection contest, and a tug-of-war where high-scoring moves shift a power indicator.
A comprehensive training section teaches basic riding and advanced maneuvers across nineteen stages. The trick system builds upon its Game Boy Color predecessor, with the R button allowing any trick to be modified into a Fakie for more variety. Successfully chaining moves without crashing fills a power bar, which when full enables a rider's signature move for increased points.
