Salt Lake 2002 Overview
Salt Lake 2002 is the official Game Boy Advance adaptation of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Its handheld version features a distinct set of six events: Ski Jumping, Curling, Downhill Skiing, Bobsleigh, Snowboarding, and Downhill Slalom. The gameplay is structured around several modes, including a Tournament where players face an unseen opponent over four rounds, an Olympic Mode for medal competition, and a Classic Mode that sequences all six events.
Progression is tied to performance, as meeting target scores in Classic Mode is required to unlock higher difficulty settings in other modes, a system that can be challenging given a limited pool of three lives. Players can also compete against their own records in a time trial mode or engage in multiplayer sessions for up to four participants using a single console.
Control schemes and perspectives are customized per event. Racing disciplines like Downhill, Slalom, and Snowboarding use an overhead view where athletes can crouch to accelerate, brake, or execute sharp turns. Bobsleigh begins with a side-view acceleration phase before switching to a behind-the-vehicle perspective with a guide dot for optimal positioning. Curling employs a side view and involves controlling both the stone's throw and the sweepers, while Ski Jumping focuses on balancing a reticle and timing a button press for the landing.
