Tonka : On the Job Overview
Tonka: On the Job is a simulation title based on the toy truck brand, where players operate various vehicles to complete construction tasks. The gameplay unfolds in small, scrolling 2D environments like dirt yards and forests, viewed from above.
Players manage a fleet of specialized trucks, such as dump trucks and front loaders, each with unique functions. Objectives involve activities like digging and clearing, which grow more complex as more vehicles become available, often requiring coordinated use between them. The game allows instant switching between deployed trucks to facilitate this.
Performance in each job is rated, with factors like fuel efficiency influencing the score. Efficient driving, staying on roads, and avoiding unnecessary movement conserve fuel. Some vehicle actions consume more fuel, and later levels introduce elements like traffic to avoid.
While most tasks have defined steps, there is often flexibility in the order of operations and multiple ways to complete a job. Optional, timed side tasks, such as extinguishing fires with a rescue truck, can appear for bonus fuel rewards.
The game offers a structured series of jobs as well as a freeplay mode for open-ended use of the vehicles. The Game Boy Advance version features 11 trucks, with the PC version having two more and higher-resolution graphics, though the core content and scenarios remain largely the same.
