Pokemon Sienna Overview
Pokemon Sienna is a role playing game where players capture and train creatures for turn based combat. The adventure begins in the Johto region, a new setting separate from the land featured in earlier titles, where the player character receives a first creature from a professor. A core objective involves defeating a series of eight Gym Leaders, followed by a final challenge against the region's Elite Four and Champion.
Exploration and creature collection are central activities. The player navigates an overworld, encounters wild creatures, and attempts to capture them using special items to build a team. Combat revolves around type advantages, move accuracy, and status effects, with progression achieved by earning experience to level up and evolve creatures. Resource management is a factor, as healing and restorative items must be purchased with in game currency. The overall structure can be considered fair, balancing collection, strategy, and progression.
This installment expanded the roster of available creatures by introducing 100 new species, bringing the total to 251. This expansion included new evolutionary lines for some existing creatures. To address strategic balance, two new elemental types, Dark and Steel, were added to the battle system. A breeding mechanic was also introduced, allowing compatible creatures left at a special facility to produce an Egg that hatches after the player travels a set distance.
Several new systems were integrated into the world. A real time clock influences which creatures appear at different hours and enables time specific events. The player carries a multi function device that provides a map, a phone for contacting non player characters, and a radio. After completing the initial journey, the entire region from the previous generation becomes accessible, effectively doubling the explorable world and presenting additional Gym Leaders to challenge.
Multiplayer functions for trading and battling with other players were originally facilitated by a physical cable. Certain creatures were exclusive to this version, making trading with other compatible titles necessary for a complete collection. A later digital re release implemented wireless functionality for these same trading and battling features.
