Megaman Battle Network is set in a future where a boy named Lan operates a specialized device called a PET. This terminal houses a unique network navigator known as Mega Man.EXE, who functions as Lan's partner in cyberspace.
The core activity involves entering computer networks to confront viruses and other threats. Combat occurs in real time, with successful engagements yielding program data called Battle Chips. These chips, of which there are more than 175 to obtain, provide weaponry and system information crucial for progressing.
