Megaman Battle Network 5 Team Protoman is an RPG where players alternate between controlling a boy named Lan in the real world and his digital companion, Mega Man, in cyberspace. The narrative involves confronting a group distributing corrupting Dark Navi chips, with a key objective being to storm the Dark Chip Factory.
Gameplay is split between exploration and a hybrid battle system. Combat against viruses combines real time action, such as dodging attacks, with a turn based element where powerful chips are selected for use. A distinct strategic mode called Liberation Missions requires players to free darkened tiles on a grid in a challenging manner reminiscent of a board game before facing a boss.
This version introduces a story segment where control shifts to the character Protoman. As part of a dual release, it can connect with Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Colonel to exchange battle chips, some of which are exclusive to each cartridge.
