Nicktoons: Freeze Frame Frenzy is a side-scrolling game where the primary action involves photography. The premise involves a crossover event where characters from several Nickelodeon series, including Spongebob Squarepants and Danny Phantom, have been displaced into each other's worlds. Jimmy Neutron directs the player, who controls one of these characters, to resolve the situation using a special camera.
Gameplay revolves around navigating environments to photograph both the displaced characters and robotic imposters. Success is measured by achieving a target score in each level, which is reached by capturing pictures of characters and notable scenes. Some subjects require multiple photographs to be fully documented or sent back to their proper dimension. Additional points can be earned by completing specific side objectives, such as photographing particular character interactions.
Each world concludes with a boss encounter against a robot duplicate. These fights require the player to avoid attacks while attempting to take three clear pictures of the foe. The core loop combines exploration, avoiding hazards, and positioning the free-moving camera cursor for the best shots to meet the level's scoring requirements.
